Your utility is doing a third of the damage it should

Every player spends roughly the same money on grenades. The spread in what comes back is enormous, and it is almost entirely about order and intent rather than lineups.
The benchmark, measured
Utility damage per round. Total damage dealt by your non-flash grenades, divided by rounds played.
An earlier version of this guide called 5.0–6.0 “normal” and 8.0+ “good”. Then we measured it, and those numbers were wrong — high enough that almost every real player would have failed against them. Here is what 435 public profiles actually return:

The real median sits between 4.0 and 4.7 across the entire ladder. So:
- Under 3.5 — genuinely low, worth fixing
- 4.0–4.7 — normal, at every level
- 5.5+ — above the median for any level

Someone sitting at 3.0 is throwing the same money as someone at 5.5 and getting a little over half the return. Across 20,000 rounds that is roughly 50,000 damage left unclaimed — but read the next section before treating that as the whole story, because the number does something strange at the top of the ladder.
The number peaks in the middle and falls at the top
Look at that table again. Utility damage rises to 4.66 at Levels 6 and 7, then drops to 4.06 at Level 9 — below the Level 4 median.
The obvious reading is that better players throw less utility. That is almost certainly wrong. The likelier explanation is that damage is a poor measure of a good grenade once you are past Level 7:
- A molotov that clears an angle without touching anybody is a good molotov, and scores zero.
- A smoke that wins a site take does zero damage by definition.
- Chip damage through a wall onto a player who then repositions safely scores well and wins nothing.
Level 6 players farm chip damage with HEs. Level 9 players use utility to take space. The scoreboard rewards the first and the round rewards the second.
So treat this metric as diagnostic below about Level 7 and as context above it. A low number at Level 9 is not automatically a problem; a low number at Level 4 usually is. It is also why a report on this site weights utility below role and session findings rather than above them.
The buy order
This is the whole guide, honestly:
smoke → flash → molotov → flash → HE last
Buy in that order every round you can afford to, and stop when the money runs out. It works because it is ordered by how much of the round each grenade changes.
Smoke takes an angle out of the game for 18 seconds. It does not need aim, timing or a teammate to be worth the $300 — it changes the geometry of the round whether or not anyone is looking.
Flash is the only grenade that directly wins a duel. Two per round is not excessive; it is the standard for anyone who intends to take a fight.
Molotov denies space for the entire burn and forces movement you can predict. On CT side it is often the difference between holding a site alone and losing it.
HE does 20–30 damage to someone who is probably behind cover, once.
Why HE last
An HE is $300 for a one-off chunk of damage against a target you usually cannot see. In a specific situation it is excellent: a confirmed stack, a post-plant where you know where they are defusing from, a retake choke with two bodies in it. As a default buy it is the worst money in the game.
The trap is that HE feels productive. You see a damage number. A smoke gives you no feedback at all and is worth several times more.
One honest caveat on measurement: FACEIT reports non-flash grenades as a single count, so HE, molotov and smoke are lumped together in the public stats. Damage per grenade is exact; nobody can tell you your HE-specific split from the public API. If your damage-per-grenade sits around 11 while a teammate’s sits at 25, though, the composition is not really in doubt.
Flashes: thrown is not the metric
Two flashes a round with a 46% success rate sounds fine. It usually is not, because “success” only means an enemy was blinded — not that anyone used it.
A flash nobody follows is $200 spent on a warning. The question is not how many you throw, it is whether someone was moving when it landed.
Three habits that fix it:
- Say it. “Flashing left” costs nothing and doubles the value of the grenade.
- Pop-flash over long flashes. A flash they can turn from is a flash that helps them.
- Throw for someone else’s fight. Support flashing is the highest-leverage thing a non-entry player does, and it does not show up in your K/D at all.
Molotovs are underrated on both sides
On T side a molly into a common hold spot forces the CT to move at a moment you chose. On CT it buys the six seconds your rotation needs.
Neither shows up as a kill. Both show up as rounds won, which is the only stat that matters.
Two failures that look the same and want opposite fixes
There are two distinct ways utility goes wrong, and confusing them is how players make things worse.
Low output. You throw a normal number of grenades and get very little back. A real Level 8 profile sits at 3.5 damage per round against a 4.57 median, with 6,305 non-flash grenades returning 11.2 damage each — against 9,701 flashes at a 46% success rate. Their mix is good: they throw more flashes than nades, which is the correct direction. They just are not getting value from the nades they do throw. The fix is placement and timing — buy order is already right.
Bad mix. You get plenty of damage, from far too many grenades. A Level 10 profile throws 18,822 non-flash grenades against 13,931 flashes — a ratio of 1.35 where it should be 0.6 or below. Their utility damage is 5.0 per round, comfortably above the 4.14 median for their level, and their flash success rate of 56% is the best in our example set. Telling this player to increase their utility damage would be telling them to throw even more nades, which is the actual problem.
The distinction matters because the instinctive advice — “get more value from your utility” — is right for the first player and actively harmful for the second. If your damage per round is above the median for your level and your nade-to-flash ratio is above 0.6, your job is to convert nades into flashes, not to squeeze more damage out of them.
A rough self-check: count what you buy over one map. If non-flash grenades outnumber flashes, you have a mix problem regardless of what your damage number says.
Three fixes, in order
- Change the buy order. Nothing else, one week. Smoke and flashes before anything else, HE only when you can name why.
- Two flashes a round minimum, and call every one of them.
- Stop buying HE by default. Confirmed stack, post-plant, retake choke. Otherwise it is a molotov.
Utility damage is one of the few metrics that responds within a week, because it is entirely decision-driven — there is no skill to build, only a habit to change.
