How FACEIT ELO actually works

Most players know their level and almost nothing about the number underneath it. That gap matters, because the level is a label and the ELO is the thing that moves.

The level table

FACEIT levels are fixed ELO bands. They do not shift with the population, and they are not percentiles.

Two things stand out. The bands are not equal — Level 3 is 150 points wide, Level 9 is 250 — and Level 10 has no ceiling. Everyone from 2001 to 3500 wears the same badge, which is why “Level 10” describes wildly different players.

What you win and lose per match

In an even matchup, roughly ±25 ELO. The exact figure moves with the rating difference between the two teams: beat a stronger team and you gain more, lose to a weaker one and you lose more. FACEIT has never published the formula, and anyone who tells you they know it exactly is guessing.

For planning purposes ±25 is the number to use, because it is what you will see most of the time.

The maths that makes climbing feel slow

Here is the part that reframes everything. Your net ELO per match is not 25. It is:

25 × (2 × winrate − 1)

At a 50% win rate that is zero. Not slow — zero. You can play a thousand matches at 50% and finish exactly where you started, which is precisely what happens to most players who feel stuck.

At 55%, you net 2.5 ELO per match. At 57%, 3.5. At 60%, 5.

Run that against a real gap. Say you are at 1751 and want Level 10 at 2001, so you need 250 ELO:

Five percentage points of win rate is the difference between 100 matches and 50. The gap is never the problem. The margin is. You can run the numbers for your own ELO with the ELO calculator.

Why grinding harder usually fails

The instinct when you are 250 ELO short is to play more. But volume multiplies whatever your current margin is, and if that margin is zero, more volume produces more variance and the same ELO — plus fatigue, which lowers the margin further.

Worse, long sessions have a shape. Most players’ win rate is highest in their first three matches of a session and drops after that. So playing eight matches instead of four does not double your climb; it adds four matches at a worse win rate than the ones you already played. This is why so many accounts show the same cycle — climb 300, hit a peak, give back 400 — over and over.

The fix is not more matches. It is a higher win rate over the same number of matches, which comes from fixing something specific about how you play.

What the win rate is actually made of

“Raise your win rate five points” is not advice, it is a restatement of the goal. So it is worth looking at what actually differs between a player at one level and a player at the next, because the answer is narrower than most people expect.

We measured the median lifetime stats of 435 public FACEIT profiles, roughly 40 at each level. The full table is published here, but three rows of it explain most of the climb:

Notice what ADR does. It climbs almost seven points between Level 3 and Level 6, and then 1.4 points across the entire rest of the ladder. The single most quoted number in Counter-Strike stops discriminating at about Level 6, which means that from Level 7 upward, “do more damage” is not the mechanism. Two players separated by 400 ELO are doing near-identical damage per round.

What keeps moving is opening duel conversion and headshot percentage — one a positioning and timing outcome, the other a mechanical one. Neither appears on the end-of-match scoreboard.

Where the ELO actually goes

It helps to think in rounds rather than matches. A best-of-24 match is decided by 13 rounds, and most rounds are decided by the opening duel: whoever wins it plays the rest of the round a man up, with better information and more utility left over.

Run the arithmetic. If you are in 20% of your team’s opening duels — which the measured data says is roughly everyone, at every level — that is about five opening duels per half, ten per match. Moving from winning 45% of them to winning 52% converts less than one duel per match.

Less than one duel per match is what five points of win rate looks like from the inside. That is why it feels invisible while you are playing and obvious in the numbers afterwards, and it is why “play better” never works as an instruction: the change you are looking for is too small to feel.

Placement matches and soft resets

At the end of a FACEIT season there is a soft reset with placement matches. These swing far more ELO than a normal game — sometimes several times as much — which cuts both ways. A good placement run can move you a level in a handful of games; a bad one can undo a month.

Practical rules for placements:

  • Play them warmed up, not as the first thing you do after opening your PC.
  • Play them on your best maps only.
  • Stop after two straight losses, exactly as you would in a normal session. The bigger swings make tilt more expensive, not less.

Peak ELO, and why nobody can show you yours

FACEIT does not expose historical peak ELO through its public API. Sites that show you a peak either tracked it themselves from the day you first appeared, or they are showing you your current number with a different label. If your peak matters to you, the only way to have it is to start recording it.

Four things people believe that the numbers do not support

“My ELO is stuck because of my teammates.” In solo queue you are the only constant across hundreds of matches. Teammate quality is real and it is noise: it averages out over a large sample, and your lifetime win rate is a large sample. If that number sits at 50%, the constant is what put it there.

“I need to improve my aim.” Sometimes true, and much less often than assumed above Level 6, where the ADR medians flatten. A player at 1,700 ELO with 80 ADR does not have an aim problem in any meaningful sense — they have the aim of a Level 9. What they do not have is the opening duel conversion.

“Level 10 is the goal.” Level 10 starts at 2001 and has no ceiling, so it contains players 1,500 ELO apart wearing the same badge. Reaching 2001 changes your badge and, in practice, changes your lobbies less than the jump from 7 to 8 does. There is more on what actually changes in what Level 10 is really like.

“I’ll grind it out this month.” Volume multiplies your margin. If the margin is near zero, the month produces variance and fatigue. The players who climb fastest are usually the ones who played fewer, better-conditioned matches — which is the finding in this Level 10 profile, where two long evenings cost 225 ELO from an account whose per-match numbers are at or above the median for its level.

What to take from this

  1. Your level is a label; your ELO is the state, and your win rate is the derivative.
  2. At 50% you are not climbing slowly, you are not climbing.
  3. A few points of win rate change everything, and they come from fixing one specific behaviour — not from playing more.
  4. Above Level 6, that behaviour is almost never damage output. The measured medians say damage stops separating players there, and something else takes over.
