What actually changes between Level 5 and Level 10

The gap between Level 5 and Level 10 is about 950 ELO, which sounds enormous. In terms of what a player actually does differently, it is narrower and more specific than most people expect.
This guide used to answer that question from impressions. Then we measured it — 435 public FACEIT profiles, roughly 40 per level — and two of the answers were wrong in ways worth correcting in public. Here is what the measured medians actually say between Level 5 and Level 10:

What barely changes
Aim, relative to expectations. ADR climbs about 9% across 950 ELO — real, but not a different sport, and less than half the gap this guide previously claimed. Plenty of Level 6 players out-aim plenty of Level 9 players and stay at Level 6.
Reaction time. Not the bottleneck at any point in this range.
Knowledge of lineups. Level 10 players know more smokes, but the marginal ones are rarely what decided the match.
Clutching. 38.8% at Level 5, 38.7% at Level 10. The most visible skill in the game is essentially constant across the entire range this guide covers.
How often you take first contact. 19.1% against 19.3%. Which is the point below.
What changes a lot
Opening duel conversion. 48.6% to 52.4% — a four-point swing on the metric with the widest, cleanest spread in the whole table. Whoever wins the opening plays the round a man up, so four points here is worth far more than nine percent of ADR.
Who takes the opening duels. Note that the rate does not change at all. What changes is whether it was decided. At Level 5 whoever is in front takes first contact by accident. At Level 10 the same one or two people take them every round, deliberately, with support and utility behind them. The role exists — and where it does not, it costs: a Level 10 profile in our examples sits at 26.2% entry rate with a 57% win rate, carrying a −130 opening duel balance on the strength of everything else they do well.
Headshot percentage. The only metric in the measured table that never goes down at any step. Six points across the range. Slowest thing on this list to change, and the most honest.
The one that goes the wrong way
Utility damage falls. 4.55 per round at Level 5, 4.14 at Level 10, with a peak of 4.66 around Levels 6–7. This guide previously claimed it nearly doubled. It does not; it declines.
The reading is not that better players throw less utility. It is that damage is a bad measure of a good grenade at the top: a molotov that clears an angle without touching anyone scores zero, and a smoke that wins a site take scores zero by definition. Level 6 players farm chip damage with HEs. Level 10 players use utility to take space and to set up someone else’s fight.
So the real change is in composition rather than output, and the public API cannot see it — which is exactly the kind of thing worth saying out loud rather than papering over with a confident number. More in the utility guide.
Trading. At Level 5, deaths happen alone. At Level 10, deaths get traded, so a lost duel does not become a lost round.
Economy coordination. Level 5 lobbies have four buys and one eco constantly. Level 10 lobbies mostly buy together, because someone says so.
Post-plant. Level 5 plants the bomb and fights. Level 10 plants the bomb and plays the clock — which is why so many rounds that look lost on paper are not.
What changes most and gets discussed least
Session discipline. This is the largest difference and almost nobody names it.
Level 10 accounts are not made of players who never tilt. They are made of players who stop. The same person, playing the same twelve matches spread across three good sessions instead of one long night, is a meaningfully higher-rated player — because the last four matches of a long session are played by a worse version of them.
Two people with identical mechanics, one who queues five matches and logs off and one who queues until it stops hurting, end up two levels apart within a year. That is the whole difference, and it is available to anyone today.
The honest ladder
Level 5 → 7. Mechanics and basic map knowledge. This is the range where aim practice genuinely pays, because there is real headroom.
Level 7 → 9. Decisions. Which fight, when, having bought what. Aim improvement stops paying here — most people at Level 8 have adequate mechanics and a specific decision leak. This is also where most accounts stall for years.
Level 9 → 10. Consistency and discipline. Nothing new to learn; the task is to stop losing the ELO you already earn. Almost every stalled Level 9 has hit 1900+ at some point and given it back.
Level 9 to Level 10, in numbers
The last step is the one people ask about most, and it is the smallest in the data by a distance:

Identical K/D. Under a point of ADR. The two columns that move are headshot percentage and opening duel conversion, by two points and 1.3 points respectively.
There is no new skill on the other side of that line. Which is good news and bad news at once: the good news is you almost certainly already play well enough, and the bad news is that the thing standing between you and it is not something you can practise in a warmup server. The uncomfortable implication
If you are Level 8 or 9 and you are grinding aim maps, you are practising the thing that is already fine.
That is not a criticism of aim training — it is a scheduling problem. There is a range where it is the highest-value thing you can do, and if you are past it, the same hour spent on buy discipline or session rules returns more.
The way to tell which range you are in is to compare your ADR to the measured median for your level — 75.4 at Level 5, 81.1 at Level 6, 81.2 at Level 8, 82.5 at Level 10. At or above it, mechanics are not your constraint. Below it by more than about five points, they might be.
And note how tight those numbers get above Level 6. From Level 6 upward the medians sit within 1.4 points of each other, which means “below the median for my level” stops being a meaningful category almost as soon as you get there. That flatness is itself the argument: past Level 6, the ladder is not made of damage.
